The company operates more than 6000 stores worldwide and will close about 3% of their stores which is about 150 stores.

Sales were sluggish throughout the holiday season including consoles or hardware sales, which was down near 30%, games or software sales were down at the gaming stores at about 20%. Word of the news had Gamstop stock falling 12% Friday. Sluggish sales are in part due to competition from internet giant Amazon, and stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

The company does have a game plan moving forward, opening non-gaming stores.

GameStop operated 9 stores in North Dakota which include 2 in Bismarck.

No word on what stores will close. The news came in a month where other brick-and-mortar stores like J.C. Penney's announced store closings nationwide including North Dakota locations.

No word on which locations of GameStop will be closing.
