Former Bismarck High Star Jared Spooner To Play In Frozen Four!
Britta Curl from Bismarck Century just won a woman's National Championship in hockey for Wisconsin. Minnesota State forward and former Bismarck High Demon & Bismarck Bobcat Jared Spooner has a chance to do that this weekend for the Mavericks.
It's only fitting that Minnesota State won it's first NCAA playoff game ever with Jared Spooner on their team. Why? Because Bismarck High won it's only state championship hockey title back in 2014 with Jared Spooner being a big part of that team.
I sat down with a couple of Jared's former coaches to get the scoop on the Senior Assistant Captain for Minnesota State.
His former head hockey coach Mike Peluso had this to say about Jared, "Jared came to BHS as a freshmen." "Barely filling out his Demon uniform he was undoubtedly the hardest worker player coming into camp." "Bright eye and willing to learn, we knew "Spoons" could be a special player, but we also knew he had something else that was very special." "Leadership!"
You see, Jared got hurt in his rookie season at BHS, but he probably learned more hanging out in the coaches office, than he would have ever learned out on the ice that season. Coach Peluso went on to say, "I feel this was a huge reason in Bismarck High winning its first ever State Title!" "I think he took those inside hockey/life tidbits we talked about daily and carried those with him in his own journey." Coach Peluso also went on to say, "It really isn't surprising his college team is now in position to win a National title!" "As his former coach and now a friend, I'm so very proud of this young man!" If Minnesota State plays UMD in the finals, no doubt Mike Peluso will be torn as a UMD graduate, but he will want nothing more than the best for Jared!
Current Bismarck Demons head coach Wesley Carr had this to say about Jared, "Something everyone needs to know is how hard Jared has worked to get to where he is at today." "I personally have never coached anyone more devoted to improving his ability, than Jared has." "He leadership is unmatched by any other captain or senior in the room." Jared was always the kids to show up for both the JV and Varsity practices just to get more reps. "He was a true rink rat", said Coach Carr.
Jared was also an outstanding baseball player for Bismarck High. Always staying late to get extra cuts or ground balls. "Jared made himself a Division 1 athlete through hard work and dedication." "Athletes like Jared don't come around very often, a very special young man" added Coach Carr.
Jared Spooner and his Minnesota State Mavericks will play St. Cloud State Huskies this Thursday at 4pm in the NCAA Frozen Four in Pittsburg. Best of luck to one of Bismarck's finest.
