5 years ago in North Dakota, we were just recovering from the "Pheasant Opener Snowstorm".

We had just under 20 inches of snow drop in Bismarck and other parts of the state saw nearly double that. It shut down highways and closed schools and businesses.

It made hunting pheasants for the opener all but impossible. You would've been crazy to venture out in that snowstorm. Yet, that's exactly what I did with a friend of mine as we headed down by Flasher and Carson to see what we could find for birds.  Needless to say, our biggest accomplishment was getting unstuck several times.

You may recall, that summer and fall (2019) were extremely wet.

Virtually none of the crops had been harvested yet that year when that snowstorm hit, causing extreme hardships for the farming and ranching communities.  Some crops weren't harvested until the following spring.

What a difference 5 years can make.

We are dry, and I mean dry as a popcorn fart dry. Some signs are pointing to precipitation chances for the last couple of weeks of October, which is great for the fire danger.  However, snow doesn't look very likely at this point as temperatures look to be too warm.

When can we expect to see the most snowfall during the 2024-2025 season in North Dakota?

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, we are expecting about an average snowfall season in North Dakota.  Bismarck sees on average about 46 inches of snow a year.

The snowiest periods are expected to be mid-November, mid- and late January and late February.

The mid-November snow may be our first snowfall of the season in Bismarck too. With the current fire danger, I think just about all of us would take some snow right about now. Ready or not, it's coming.
