I know what you're thinking, there's no such thing as a "good" gas station sandwich.

That might be true in most cases.  We've all seen those less-than-appetizing hot dogs, burgers, and chicken sandwiches under heat lamps at gas stations across the state.

What's that line from the immortal Chevy Chase in the movie Vacation, "I'm so hungry I could actually eat a sandwich from a gas station."

However, we have a gas station sandwich in North Dakota that breaks that mold.

One of my co-workers a couple of years back turned me on to these sandwiches.  He told us about these gas station gems that they only make on Thursdays and how delicious they were.  We were all like, "What is this guy smoking?"  Again, a gas station sandwich that is actually good?  Unheard of.

Well, as it turned out he was absolutely 100% correct.  This generous co-worker brought in a handful of these sandwiches for us all to enjoy and they were indeed delish.

I'm of course referring to the Runway Express (Cenex) and their North Dakota famous "steak sandwich" they serve every Thursday.

The store sells over 2000 of these sandwiches every Thursday.  Those are pretty impressive numbers for a gas station sandwich.  People come from all over the state to eat these.  Oh, by the way, none of them are pre-made and they're all freshly grilled at the store.

Runway Express is a member of the Tri Energy Cooperative.

They are a part of the Cenex chain of stores in the region.  The Cenex in Mandan on Memorial Highway is hoping to add this steak sandwich to his gas station's hot food options in the near future.  According to one of their managers, It would likely not be on a Thursday but a different day of the week, so as not to conflict with what they do at Runway Express.

With thousands of people enjoying these steak sandwiches every Thursday, this is not earth-shattering news in the Bismarck Mandan area.

However, the rest of the state is quickly learning how mouth-watering this succulent sandwich is.  If you haven't tried one yet, I would mark it on your calendar for this Thursday.  You'll be glad you did.
