Enhanced Risk For Powerful Thunderstorms Across North Dakota
***UPDATE*** A Severe Thunder Storm Watch has been issued for the following counties until 9 pm.
Adams, Foster, Kidder, McLean, Oliver, Grant, Logan, Mercer, Emmons, Sioux, McIntosh & Hettinger (This includes most of our listening area).
A Level 2 threat for severe thunderstorms across southern North Dakota is possible today and tonight (Monday, July 1st, 2024).
According to the Storm Prediction Center and the National Weather Service, we could have more than one kind of fireworks in the skies over Bismarck Mandan tonight. Here's a look at the map.
As you can see by the map above, south-central and southeast North Dakota will be the main focus for potential severe weather tonight.
This will include most of our listening areas in south-central and parts of southwest North Dakota.
The timing and impacts for today's potential severe weather event:
Thunderstorms will continue across mostly northern and northeast North Dakota will continue this morning. Thunderstorms are expected to redevelop this afternoon and early evening across western North Dakota and work their way across the state.
Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are possible across the state with large hail up to ping pong ball size and damaging winds up to 60 miles per hour. Early evening looks to be the most likely time we could have impactful weather in the Capital Region.
The rest of the 4th of July week looks to be unsettled as well.
We have the mention of showers or thunderstorms every day this week in the forecast. Unfortunately, the next best chance for significant precipitation for Bismarck Mandan looks to be on the 4th of July Thursday with an 80% chance for showers and thunderstorms that could drown out your Independence Day celebrations.
The long-range forecast does show warmer and dryer conditions as we get into next week.
