Surprising Findings In North Dakota's School District Rankings

It's Graduation Weekend Across North Dakota

Cue the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, as the class of 2026 prepares to walk down the aisle and receive their diplomas, our friends at Niche have calculated the top school districts in the state.

These rankings were based on the analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents right here in North Dakota from the United States Department of Education. Some of the ranking factors include state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, teacher quality, public school district ratings, and more. SAT/ACT scores, which have been previously used too for these rankings, have been removed to reflect a general de-emphasis on test scores in the college admissions process.

How Area School Districts Scored

The top school district in the state is not that far from Bismarck-Mandan. In fact, we have a total of two school districts in the Capital Region that made the 10 best in the state. Only two school districts in the top 10 come from our larger North Dakota cities. Yep, that means the majority of our best school districts come from our smaller communities. That actually surprises me.

Before we get to the top 10 best school districts in the state, let's take a look at our area school districts that finished just outside the top 10 for 2026.
