Back in the Business

If you grew up an UND hockey fan in North Dakota, you no doubt listened to the games on the radio, and what you heard was what many called "perfection." Many called him the BEST play-by-play hockey announcer not only in college hockey, but you could throw in the NHL too. I'm talking about none other than North Dakota's Tim Hennessy.

It was announced earlier this summer that the University of North Dakota had parted ways with its legendary voice of "Fighting Hawks" hockey. Tim Hennessy has been behind the mic during both the Fighting Sioux and now Fighting Hawks eras.

The Dismissal

According to Yahoo Sports, it was announced that UND would no longer employ radio announers full-time, and that role will now fall under "Fighting Hawks Sports Partnership", which employs UND's other sports annoouners. How it went down is what had many UND hockey fans ready to drop the gloves.

Hennessy had Hoped for One More Year

And it appears he will indeed get that. According to North Dakota Athletics, Tim Hennessy will be back to call all home games in 2026-2027, and the school says it will be his last. Former UND player Mike LaMoine will be back to color commentary on the broadcasts. Darrin Looker will handle play-by-play responsibilities for road games. It's the same setup as last year.

At least Hennessy will get to go out on his terms. Something this legendary broadcaster deserved.
