We all know there are things you should have stashed away in your car or truck for the winter months, known as the winter survival kit.

With the threat of possible snow storm moving through the area this coming weekend, it's a good time to make sure your winter survival kit is up to day in your car or truck.

Some of the items are obvious such as a phone charger, extra cell phone battery if possible, snack bars or cereal bars, kitty litter and snow shovel. It's always a good idea to have extra gloves, wool caps and blankets. You never know how long you'll be stranded, if you should get stranded, and you never know how long it'll take for the authorities to come to your rescue.

It's a good idea to have water and even sports drinks like Gatorade. Here is another trick we used in our duck blinds. Get rubbing alcohol, a roll of toilet paper and a tin coffee can. When heat is needed, place the roll of toilet paper in the tin coffee can, soak in rubbing alcohol, then light. This will keep a very low flame and will burn for hours. Once the heat is no longer needed, place the top on the coffee can to snuff out the flame, and the covered can will keep the can ready for the next use.

Other items in your survival kit should include

  • Flash light and batteries
  • Road side flares and caution reflectors
  • Jumper cables
  • Tire tool
  • Knife
  • Rope or cable
  • Sleeping bag
  • Dry clothing

And stay up to date with all weather information being posted by the National Weather Service and as always, 1033 US COUNTRY will keep you informed to stay ahead of the storm.
