The Meaning Behind This North Dakota City’s Sidewalk Art
One North Dakota city has recently seen some elaborate sidewalk art appear downtown.
I was running a couple of errands downtown, Bismarck, over my lunch hour, and this art really jumps out at you.
At first, I was wondering if this graffiti was the work of some kids with too much time on their hands.
After a little investigation, I found out this sidewalk art has meaning for the wellness of our community.
According to a press release from the city of Bismarck, more of these colorful sidewalks are planned for the purpose of encouraging physical activity, community connection, and beautifying public spaces.
Here are a couple of snapshots of what you will see in downtown Bismarck on the sidewalk near Brick Oven Bakery, from 4th Street to Broadway Avenue.

As you can see, this sidewalk art is meant to get you moving.

It's an elaborate version of hopscotch.
This sidewalk art is officially being dubbed the "Movement Maze", combining public art with health promotion, featuring walkable designs, intended to inspire play, conversation, and more active lifestyles.
There are more locations planned across the city of Bismarck in the near future, and residents are encouraged to explore and engage with them as they appear.
The second maze will be located on the north side of the Bismarck Veterans Memorial Library on Avenue B, next to the existing labyrinth.
A third maze is also planned for installation at the corner of 5th Street and Broadway Avenue.
The press release goes on to say that the "Movement Mazes invite all ages to move more, laugh more, and connect with one another, all while reimagining public space," said Katie Johnke, Nutrition and Health Promotion Coordinator. "It's art you can walk on, and health you can build into your daily routine."
As somebody who is health and fitness-minded, I applaud the city of Bismarck for this move. Now, get moving, everybody.
