Unpopular Opinion: Elevate Bismarck’s Carson Wentz To QB2

Attention Carson Wentz Haters

Alright, Carson Wentz haters, hear me out. This is likely going to be an unpopular opinion, but Bismarck's very own Carson Wentz should be elevated to QB2 after his performance Saturday against the New York Giants. In fact, there's an argument he was the best quarterback on the field for both teams, including starting quarterback Kyler Murray.

Carson's Stats

He looked good. The former Bismarck Century and NDSU Bison star went 9 of 14 passing for a total of 81 yards and a beautiful touchdown pass to lead the Vikings to a 13-10 victory in a typical lackluster preseason game. Wentz also helped lead the Vikings to another field goal, so 10 of the 13 points Wentz had a hand in.

JJ McCarthy Did Not Look Good

Third-year Minnesota Vikings QB JJ McCarthy did not look good as QB2. He looked uncomfortable in the pocket, rushing throws, and missing open receivers. McCarthy finished 4 of 7 passing for 34 yards, and no points were scored during his time at quarterback. It's not that McCarthy looked terrible; he just doesn't pass the eye test with the likes of veteran quarterbacks like Murray and Wentz.

I don't think there is any question that Carson Wentz should be elevated to QB2, and McCarthy down to QB3. Wentz is someone who you want coming in with the game on the line if Murray were to get injured.

Next Up: Ravens vs Vikings

The Vikings will hold joint practices with the Baltimore Ravens later this week on Thursday and Friday prior to their game on Saturday at Noon in Minneapolis. This will be the Vikings' only home preseason game this year before they finish out the preseason at the Denver Broncos.

JJ McCarthy is a bust, and you could argue he should be traded and try to get something for this former 10th pick overall before it's too late. I'm fine with keeping him as QB3, because let's face it, in this day and age, you need three quarterbacks. All three of the Vikings' quarterbacks have a history of injuries. There's a likely chance that all of them will see action this season.

In the meantime, it's time to elevate Carson Wentz. He's just better than McCarthy. Plain and simple.
