North Dakota’s Summer Precipitation & Temperature Outlook

According to an experimental long-range forecast from the Climate Prediction Center, we are looking at more of the same this summer in North Dakota.  Unfortunately, we are looking at warm and dry summer with drought conditions persisting.  This report just came out yesterday on March 17th, 2022.

The three-month temperature probability shows about a 55% chance of a warmer than normal summer.  Those are not terrible odds.  Hopefully, it's a little cooler than last year's record-breaking 100 plus degree days we saw in Bismarck Mandan.  Give our air conditioners a bit of a break.  I think I'm still paying on last year's electrical bill.  The southwest part of the country looks to really be baking this summer.

Although there's some optimism for summer temperatures in North Dakota, there's not a whole lot of optimism for precipitation.  More of the same is expected this summer.  Much like last summer when lawns and crops just dried up because of lack of summer precipitation,  we could be looking at the same scenario in North Dakota.

Climate Prediction Center's Three Month Precipitation Outlook (June, July & August) 

Looks like we have somewhere around a 60 percent chance of below-normal precipitation chances this summer.  Last summer we saw virtually no precipitation in Bismarck Mandan.  Thunderstorms were few and far between.  April looks like we could see some decent precipitation chances.  Let's hope that April and May can maybe offset drought conditions that could persist this summer again.
