North Dakota is the least-visited state in the country.

Several recent studies have made that claim. North Dakota is often the butt of many inside jokes. However, not everybody feels that way. Check out this recent article from the Independent, basically saying that North Dakota deserves to be on your radar. In fact, we are America's best-kept vacation secret.

A few of my favorite places to visit in my home state of North Dakota include:

Turtle River State Park is located in the northeast part of the state near the town of Larimore. Scenic views and plenty to see and do if you like the outdoors.

Lake Sakakawea State Park is located near Pick City on the beautiful shores of Lake Sakakawea. A camping and fishing paradise with stunning views.

The Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area is located near Walhalla. 4 seasons' worth of activities, including horseback riding, hiking, kayaking, and mountain biking.

Despite our lack of tourists, North Dakota has a location that was just handed a prestigious award.

Medora, North Dakota, has been named one of the world's best family travel destinations, according to Travel Weekly. Travel Weekly awarded Medora as a 2025 Mengallan award winner for amazing family vacations. Medora is known for show-stopping entertainment to connecting with the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, and went on to say that every visit is packed with history and unforgettable experiences.

A panel of judges determined the list of winners, and you can read about the methodology on how they determined the winners here.
