Soon, North Dakota males and all men, for that matter, will automatically be registered for the military draft starting this December. According to an article on CNN.

This is a NEW Law

It was signed into congress part of a defense policy bill that was signed into law last year. Men ages 18 to 26 must already register for the Selective Service in case a draft ever goes into effect. The last time there was a military draft in the USA was back in 1973 during the Vietnam War.

The Iran War

This new initiative has nothing to do with the current war with Iran. This draft law was passed in late 2025 with bipartisan support. The uncertainty of the current conflict with Iran, it has led to renewed interest in a potential draft policy.

Here's What You Need to Know About This Draft

It's an automatic registration, and all United States male citizens between the ages of 18 and 26 will be auto-registered. Despite some challenges from certain organizations, females are not included in this potential draft.

Currently, in states that haven't enacted automatic registration for the selective service, they must do so within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Failure to do so is considered a felony, and you could face up to 5 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. I know that caught my attention back in the day. North Dakota began auto-registration for the Selective Service in December 2025.

The differences from Auto-Draft and Selective Service

The Selective Service maintains a list and information for potential service members in a national emergency. Meanwhile, the draft is the actual forcing of individuals into the Armed Forces to fulfill manpower needs.

All scary stuff in my opinion, especially with a son who is 21 years old and about to graduate from college. God Bless our service men and women around the world protecting our freedoms.
