What Teachers Can Accept In North Dakota: Holiday Gift Guide
Have you ever wondered what you can and can't give to your child's teacher as a Christmas gift?
I was watching "Bad Teacher" the other night. It's kind of a Christmas movie, and it got me thinking, when Cameron Diaz was receiving her Christmas gifts from her students, do we have any laws or policies in the state of North Dakota when it comes to giving Christmas gifts to teachers?
So, I decided to reach out to the Superintendent's office with Bismarck Public Schools to see what the guidelines are.
I know that some states have laws concerning gift giving to teachers right in the century code. For example, in Louisiana, all gifts must be $25 or under; you can't give cash, and they're are other stipulations.

To my surprise, after some checking on the state level, there is no mention of gift giving when it comes to teachers, and nothing in the century code. Same with Bismarck Public Schools, there is no specific policy regarding students giving tokens of appreciation to teachers. You are free to do what you want, but the Superintendent's Office did offer some insight on appropriate gifts for teachers.
Teacher-approved gifts:
Gift cards to places like Target, local coffee shops, or bookstores are a very popular teacher gift.
You could also go the classroom supply route, as some teachers have to use their own money for some supplies.
Practical items like mugs, scarves, or treats from a bakery are always appreciated.
Even an old-fashioned handwritten note or drawing of appreciation is often considered by many teachers as the most meaningful.
Gifts that are not a good idea for most likely forbidden:
Cash is not a good idea.
Homemade food is also something you should avoid. While some teachers appreciate homemade items, store-bought treats are a safer bet.
Obviously, avoid alcohol gifts.
Be sure to check with your specific school district ahead of time for policies concerning gift giving when it comes to teachers. Even though there is no policy on this with the state or Bismarck Public Schools, it may be different where your child goes to school.
Merry Christmas, everyone.
