It's Been 25 Years!

Can you remember the last time you were able to go to the gate to welcome friends and family at the airport? The answer to that question is, of course pre 911 days. Security changed dramatically at airports in America after the 911 terrosit attacks back in 2001.

One of those freedoms we lost was being able to greet loved ones at the gate, those comforting goodbyes, the reunions, and the welcome home hugs. Well, guess what? They're back at the Bismarck Airport and many other airports across the country after a 25-year absence.

According to a press release from the Bismarck Airport, there's a new program from the Transportation Security Administration that allows TSA PreCheck members to accompany loved ones to the gate or greet them the moment they step off the plane.

The Process

It's not quite as simple as pre-9/11 days, but it shouldn't cause you too much of a headache. First, you must become a part of the Gateside by TSA PreCheck. Individuals who are not enrolled yet in this program can do so here. The application will take you about ten minutes. You can also enroll in person for this program at a local location in Bismarck, including The Office Depot at 1026 Bismarck Expressway or Idemia at 11395 12th Street. 5 years' worth of benefits will cost you around $85 dollars.

Once you are a TSA PreCheck member, you can request a free Gateside pass here. You must do this 1 to 3 days before your airport visit. Once approved, visitors must present a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID at the TSA checkpoint, and you will be screened. So, it will require a little preplanning and cash to pull this off.

Bismarck Airport Officials are Excited

Bismarck Airport Assistant Director Matthew Remynse says, "We're excited for TSA to bring this opportunity to Bismarck Airport and give families and friends more time together."

I'm thinking this could open up some pretty special moments at the gates this holiday season when family and friends come home to Bismarck. Flying just got a little warmer.
