Brett Young doesn't need to beg for "Mercy" after the news that his aching ballad has claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.

"Mercy" is Young's fourth consecutive No. 1 single, stepping in line with "Sleep Without You," "In Case You Didn’t Know" and "Like I Loved You." This is quite an impressive feat for a new artist — all four of the singles he's released from a debut album have hit the top spot on the Country Airplay chart. "Mercy" has also been certified platinum by the RIAA and has racked up more than a million streams.

“We knew pretty early that ‘Mercy’ had to be a single because of the way the fans respond when I played it live. I wrote this song from a really vulnerable and honest place, so to see it go No. 1 is really special," Young says about the success of the song in a press release.

Now that "Mercy" has clinched the highest-charting position, Young will release a new singe from his sophomore album: "Here Tonight." He unveiled the song, co-written by Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum, at an industry party in Nashville in July of 2018. Young promises that the full album project will have more of a "happy" and "peppy" vibe, but he still plans to incorporate heartbreak songs he has such a gift for writing.

"I think everybody on their way to their person has way more heartbreak stories than they do happily ever afters. That's part of the journey, and I think it's important to tell those stories too," he tells Taste of Country. "The second record's definitely going to have a lot more happy, peppy stuff on it, but that's part of my journey. I like reconnecting with those old memories and having a good cathartic cry every once in a while."

While continuing to work on the album, the singer is also set to marry fiancee Taylor Mills in 2018.
