If you're Catholic, you know Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten season and it is also Valentine's Day. This doesn't happen often.

First, Catholics know Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, but for the most part, Christians go to church to get ashes on their forehead. It is a special Holy Day but not a day of obligation.

Normally on Ash Wednesday, you do not eat meat. So does this mean you'll abstain from eating meat for Valentine dinner?  Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting, is the first day of Lent in Western Christianity, and you should abstain from eating meat on Valentine's Day and on Fridays during the 40 days of Lent. This is why you'll find so many seafood options on menus weeks prior to Easter.

This is the first time both days fall on the same date since 1945. It will happen again in 2029.

In closing, celebrate Valentine's Day as you normally do. Buy flowers for your sweetheart and a box of chocolates could be in order.

For Catholics, the 40 day period where Christians pray, repent, abstain and fast can be challenging.

If you decide to abstain from meat, luckily in Bismarck, we have a great substitute with walleye!
