Unveiling The Historical Treasures Of Bismarck’s Oldest School
The Capital City's oldest school district has a long and rich history.
There's a country elementary school that I drive by often as I'm heading out of town to one of my fishing or hunting adventures.
In fact, one of our employees here at Townsquare Media actually attended school there back in the day.
I have to be honest. The first time I drove by it, I wasn't sure if the school was still in operation. It's not that the school isn't well kept; it is. It's just that it's kind of out in the middle of nowhere and a little antiquated.
This school was around the time that the city of Bismarck, North Dakota came into existence.
The oldest school in the Bismarck Mandan school district is none other than Apple Creek Elementary.
Home of the "Apple Jacks"! What a great nickname.
According to Apple Creek's website, the school district was organized in 1878 and the district had three schools. Apple Creek Elementary School is the only one still in existence.
According to Wikipedia, the city of Bismarck, North Dakota was incorporated on January 14, 1875.
Apple Creek Elementary School has been around for many years and has seen a lot of people come and go over the years. As I mentioned earlier, our very own B-Fish actually went to Apple Creek from kindergarten to sixth grade.
B-Fish said, "It was an honor to go to that school," and he graduated with six students in his sixth-grade class. No wonder he was the star of his basketball team. Ha!
The school has seen a lot of changes over the years growing from one portable to two. They now have a local business catering meals out there. When B-Fish went to school at Apple Creek Elementary, he had to bring lunch every day from home (he also had to walk to school and back home uphill both ways).
Apple Creek Elementary School is located out in the country at 2000 93rd Street Southeast, Bismarck, North Dakota.
If you haven't been out there, I encourage you to drive by and see it. It's a huge part of local area history. We hope that they are able to continue having classes and being a school district for many generations to come.
