Unveiling North Dakota’s Most “Oddly Named Town” In The State
There's been a map floating around social media the last few weeks showing the oddest town name in each state.
I tried to find an article associated with the map, but from what I can tell it's associated with a blog post, but I'm not sure where it originated.
One thing is for sure, we certainly have weirder town names in North Dakota, than the ones chosen in this map. More on that in a moment.
Before we get to the Peace Garden State, let's run down the most oddly named towns in our neighboring states.
South Dakota: Plenty Bears
According to Wikipedia, Plenty Bears is located in southwest South Dakota. It is an unincorporated community in Bennett County.
Minnesota: Little Canada
According to Wikipedia, Little Canada is a suburb of Minneapolis in Ramsey County. This city has a population of over 10,000 people and its town name origins come from a French/Canadian settler.
(What about Climax or Fertile, Minnesota?)
Montana: Big Sag
According to Wikipedia, Big Sag is another unincorporated community in Chouteau County, north-central, Montana.
Last, but certainly not least, North Dakota's Most Oddly Named Town.
North Dakota: Zap
According to Wikipedia, Zap is located in Mercer County. The population is around 200 people and it is widely known for the Zip to Zap riot, which occurred on May 10th, 1969.
It's unclear how the town was named but a couple of theories include it was named after a prominent Minnesota banking family or a coal-mining town in Scotland.
(Some honorable oddly named towns mentions in my opinion)
Flasher & Cummings. wink, wink.
