New Roundabout Law In North Dakota That Quietly Passed
There's a new roundabout law that passed during the 2025 legislature session that quietly went under the radar.
It received no coverage from our local TV stations, and to be honest, I had no idea myself until one of our listeners reached out to me. I was in disbelief at first, considering this law just passed in 2023, and then two years later, it's been reversed.
Considering the majority of people weren't obeying this law anyway, the reversal won't affect you in the least.
The roundabout law I'm speaking of was the 2023 law that requires all drivers to signal when exiting a roundabout.

This was a statewide law, and drivers could be handed a $25 dollar ticket for not doing so. Police in Lincoln, North Dakota, had a field day handing out tickets, especially that first year the law passed. I live just south of Lincoln, and it was almost a daily occurrence on the way home, I would see Lincoln PD with their bright blue and red lights lit up.
What was the reason for the initial 2023 in the first place?
For two pretty good reasons, in my opinion. For safety, and to keep traffic moving. By signaling when exiting a roundabout, you let any vehicle waiting to enter the roundabout know that it's safe to enter, and that will, in turn, keep traffic moving. A win-win.
Why was this law repealed after only two years?
I spoke to a local law enforcement officer, and he was equally surprised that this law was repealed. We joked that some legislator must have gotten pulled over and received a ticket. Something tells me that could be closer to the truth than you think.
Either way, this will make most Bismarck-Mandan-Lincoln people happy, because they didn't abide by the law anyway. You no longer need to signal when exiting a roundabout. Hell, most people don't use that blinker for any turn, let alone a roundabout.
