ALEXANDER, N.D. (AP) — A 28-year-old McKenzie County sheriff's deputy pulled from his burning department sport utility vehicle following a crash with a semi-truck has been transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

KXMB television reports Deputy Chris Cloud was on his first day of patrol after completing field training Wednesday morning when he slowed to make a U-turn to go after a speeding vehicle. The SUV was rear-ended by a semi on Highway 200 and the vehicle burst into flames.

Cloud was airlifted to Bismarck for treatment, and he has since been transferred to the Mayo Clinic.

The truck driver was not injured.

Friends and loved ones have set up an online fundraiser for the deputy and family. The group had raised more than $11,000 by Thursday afternoon.
