Several weather pages on Facebook that we follow are predicting a lot of snow and cold this winter.

I know what you are thinking. How could this be, as we have had such a beautiful September, and the long-range forecast for October and even November is above normal?

(SEE ALSO: North Dakota actually has 12 seasons, not 4!)

Yesterday was the first official day of fall, and instead of sweaters and sweatshirts, it was bikinis and sandbars. We will be pushing 80 degrees or better for the rest of the week, which will give the pontoons in Bismarck-Mandan some bonus beach time. As I drove over the Expressway bridge yesterday, the sandbars looked more like July than September with all the sun worshipers.

Just about every weather agency is predicting a warm fall for North Dakota.

However, most of them agree on one thing: when it does switch from our warm fall to winter, it's going to come roaring in like a lion. Most of these long-range weather predictions say that December through February are going to feature numerous arctic blasts and snow events.

One weather page says North Dakota could see snow measured in feet, not inches.

Upward to 100 inches of snowfall this season (4 to 6 feet). This would be similar to the winter of 2022-2023, when we did see over 100 inches of snowfall in the Capital City. The last couple of winters, I haven't even used my snowblower once, as we have had so little snow. Check out this map below.

I've seen several other weather pages predicting a similar snowfall forecast for North Dakota this winter. I guess we will find out soon enough, but in the meantime, enjoy our above-average fall temperatures. I'm going to get my snowblower ready just in case.
