These days, there's a list for everything. The latest one to feature North Dakota is actually quite amusing.

Estately recently set out with this simple mission: to find out which states have a lifestyle closest to what you would find in a country song. You know the stereotype - sitting on the back of a tailgate on a dirt road drinking a beer. Things of that nature.

And to the surprise of nobody (at least not around here), North Dakota comes in at #7 on the list. Once you see how they determined the rankings, you'll see why.

With that in mind, they used the following criteria in their search:

  • Pickup Trucks - sales for January - April 2014
  • Drinking - beer and liquor consumption (per capita)
  • Baby Done Left - Divorce/separation % among men and women
  • Most Religious - % of population saying religion is an important part of their lives
  • Cowboys and Cowgirls - # of cattle per square mile
  • Hall of Fame Country Musicians - # of musicians belonging to the Country Music Hall of Fame who were born in the state
  • Dirt Roads - miles of unpaved roads
  • Support the Troops - active military personnel in each state
  • Works Until the Day is Through - current unemployment rate in each state

Considering the guidelines, it really isn't a shock that North Dakota finds itself in the top 10. After all, we do have the lowest unemployment rate in the country, absolutely love our military, rank at the top in beer consumption, and much more.

This is what they had to say about our state :

The average day in a North Dakota person’s life involves driving the pickup (1st for sales) along dirt roads to the oil fields, working all day (1st for employment), drinking all night (1st for beer/liquor consumption), and then waking up alone because he/she never got married.

Here's how the rest of the top 10 rounds out:

  1. Oklahoma
  2. Texas
  3. Missouri
  4. Louisiana
  5. Arkansas
  6. Kansas
  7. North Dakota
  8. Kentucky
  9. South Dakota
  10. Alabama

So while this study was probably meant to be a little tongue-in-cheek, it actually points out things we North Dakotans already know: we're loyal, patriotic, fun-loving Americans, and that's something to be proud of.
