I'm still trying to learn all of the North Dakota traditions

I have been out in North Dakota now for almost 8 years and I am trying to get to know all of the traditions they have here. One, in particular, boggles my mind every time it comes up in conversation. I have become semi-used to the colder temperatures ( does anyone ever get completely used to it?) but I still can't understand ice fishing. I mean, I get the concept of it, the sport of catching a fish, but come on, freezing your you-know-what off, teeth chattering all the time, just to reel in a fish that should be frozen.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I doubt Santa Claus will be out there on the ice

I will say this, I have never tried it, so I shouldn't just declare that I would never try it, however, I think you could bait me along if you had one of those comfy ice houses filled with tv sets and heaters every 2 feet. So what's the draw? What are some of the reasons people choose to go out and face the elements? For one thing, it doesn't take a great deal of money, yes you need a license, but that's fairly cheap. According to KX NET "...North Dakota Game and Fish has announced that North Dakota residents can go Ice Fishing without a license on the weekend of December 25-26"

Ok, give me one good reason WHY you go ice fishing

I asked this question to our very own Scott McGowan from Cool 98.7. He gave me TWO reasons - the first is you hate your family and the second one is you like to drink. So there you have it, I think it's safe to say that ice fishing is a required taste, and a huge North Dakota tradition.
