According to loc.gov "The northern lights, one of several astronomical phenomena called polar lights (Aurora Polaris), are shafts or curtains of colored light visible on occasion in the night sky..." The Northern Lights can appear year-round in North Dakota, and it is well known that the furthest you get away from the city lights the better your chances of watching it. There is a great place you can visit that will give you some tips and prepare you for your first adventure to view the incredible Northern Lights. You can check out ndtourism.

Just last Monday night all across Eastern North Dakota the skies were brilliant

We here in Bismarck/Mandan were unable to catch the light show due to some annoying lingering clouds. About 296 miles east of Bismarck, Drayton North Dakota was treated to some of the most stunning light shows ever recorded. The sugar beet farmers that we"re lucky to have seen it will never forget it. I can only think of it as a gift from God, and definitely a reward for living in North Dakota!
