Even though North Dakota is doing well in terms of employment and resources, and the future may seem a bit uncertain because of the reduction in fuel prices, we have it pretty good in The Peace Garden State.

Having said that, unfortunately, every state has a very depressed and poor county. Poor would be defined as a median annual household income more than $7,000 lower than the state's median income.

24/7 Wall St. conducted a study of the poorest county in each state. The organization crunched the numbers  from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey. They looked back over a five-year period to estimate the median annual household income from 2009 through 2013.

In North Dakota, the poorest county would be Rolette County at the north boarder of the state. The county seat is Rolla, ND. According to the latest census numbers, the population of the county is 14,582. (2013)

More than 34% of Rolette County residents did not have health insurance during the five years through 2013, versus 14.9% nationwide. The low coverage rate was likely the result of the low incomes and weak job market. Nearly 13% of the workforce was unemployed in 2013, versus the national unemployment rate of 7.4%.

These findings were published last week from 24/7 Wall St.( January 6th)
