How Many People Now Have West Nile Virus In North Dakota?
A potentially dangerous virus has been confirmed in North Dakota.
This virus pops up every summer in North Dakota. 80 percent of people who become infected with this virus are asymptomatic, but a small percentage of people (20 percent) develop a fever. An even smaller percentage (about 1 in 150) develops a serious, sometimes fatal illness.
The potentially deadly virus we are talking about is the West Nile Virus.
According to the CDC, the West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.
We have had a very stormy summer so far in 2025, and with wet conditions in many areas of the state, it has created the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. More mosquitoes increase the likelihood of the West Nile virus in North Dakota.
What are the symptoms of West Nile Virus? How do you know if you have it?
According to the CDC, West Nile virus symptoms include a fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or a rash. All of these could be confused with the common flu.
You can find out if you are infected with the West Nile virus when your health care provider conducts a blood test. There is no vaccine available for the West Nile virus.
How many people have been confirmed with the West Nile Virus in North Dakota so far in 2025?
According to the CDC, six cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in the state so far, including one case in Burleigh County. McLean & Mercer also have one reported case each. Cass County leads the state with three cases of West Nile virus confirmed.
What's the best way to avoid West Nile Virus?
The most effective way to prevent West Nile virus is to prevent mosquito bites. Use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and eliminate mosquito breeding sites around your home (get rid of any type of standing water).
