WATCH: Wild Goalie SCORES! North Dakota Fans React!
For the first time in Minnesota Wild history, one of their goaltenders has scored a goal.
It happened last evening, Monday, October 15th, as goalie Filip Gustavsson flipped a shot down the ice over a couple of defenders nearly 200 feet away to light the lamp. Gustavsson just put himself in the record book, as the goal was also a powerplay goal, which makes it even more unique.
This marks the first time a Minnesota Wild goaltender has ever scored a goal and is only the 15th goalie in NHL history to score a goal. According to NHL.com, only 18 goalie goals have ever been scored, and only 16 during the regular season (2 happened during the Stanley Cup Playoffs).
Here's how it all went down.
The Minnesota Wild were beating the St. Louis Blues 3-1 late in the third period when the Blues decided to pull their goalie for an extra attacker.
Gustavsson gloved down a long slap shot from a Blues player. He then immediately put the puck down on the ice, dropped to one knee, and let the puck fly where it rolled into the net with only :09 seconds remaining in the third period.
I was watching the game on ESPN and I was literally in shock, as I have never witnessed a goalie goal before live.
The Minnesota Wild are off to a good start this season, having amassed 6 of a possible 8 points through 4 games. Super Talk 1270 is your home for the Minnesota Wild in Bismarck Mandan.
