Do we have scorpions in North Dakota?  The only scorpions I had heard of before were the ones that "Rock You Like a Hurricane."  As far as the little scary creature scorpions,  being born and raised in eastern North Dakota, I was thinking FALSE.  I've never seen or even heard of somebody in North Dakota with a scorpion encounter before.  As it turns out I was WRONG.

When I think of scorpions, terrifying moments come to mind.  Like when you turn the light on in the middle of the night to get a glass of water, and a scorpion runs across the kitchen floor.  After all, they're nocturnal and come out at night.

My brother who lives in California told me a similar story recently when he went to turn on the light in his closet, and a scorpion took off like a bat out of hell.  The creature literally ran across his foot.  Luckily, it didn't sting him.

According to Medscape, the estimated annual number of scorpion stings is in the neighborhood of 1.2 million, and over 3,000 people die from those bites annually.

What about North Dakota?  Do we have these creatures from hell?  As it turns out WE DO!  In fact, we have not one, but TWO species of scorpions who call North Dakota home.  Now, before you put your house up for sale and move to Alaska, you'll be glad to know that neither one will kill you.

According to Bird Watching HQ, the first species of scorpion we have in North Dakota is about the size of a small wood tick.  You might not even know you have them in your house they're so small.  As it turns out they do more good than harm.  They are known as the Pseudoscorpion.  They are very small and have a reddish, brown color but can vary.  They have 8 small legs and large pincers that are twice as long as the legs.  They have NO stinger.  They are found statewide and like to inhabit homes.  They are considered harmless to humans, but they are a predator that will help keep your home free of small unwanted creatures.

We also have a "big boy" scorpion so to speak that inhabits North Dakota.  Known as the Northern Scorpion, its primary range is southwest, North Dakota.  It's a scary-looking creature but its bark is worse than its bite.  Unlike other scorpions, you will not die from the sting of a Northern Scorpion.  It's more like a wasp or hornet sting.  Here's a look at this creepy crawley.
