Roundabouts really aren't that complicated to navigate.

I'm not trying to be mean, but some of you look petrified when entering a roundabout in the Bismarck Mandan.  I mean scared $hitless.  I have to laugh because it's really, really simple when it comes to driving in a roundabout.

I see people on different Facebook groups all the time complaining about them.  If you do the research on roundabouts you'll find out they have two purposes.  To improve the flow of traffic and safety.

You will do both of those if you simply remember these 5 Commandments.

5.  Don't slow down when entering a roundabout (obey the speed limit of course) unless you have to yield for an oncoming vehicle in the roundabout already.

4.  Do NOT signal when entering a roundabout.  EVER.  Everybody knows what direction you are going already, and you are not changing lanes.  Therefore, you are not required to do so.  You are not doing anybody any favors by signaling when entering a roundabout.  You just look silly (I actually saw somebody turn on their LEFT turn signal when entering a roundabout the other day??? WTH?).

3.  Do NOT turn your signal on the second you enter a roundabout unless you take that first exit.  That's right, some people like to keep their signal on the entire roundabout and again you look ridiculous.

2.  Do NOT stop before entering a roundabout unless again there is a vehicle in the roundabout that you will collide with.  Again, that is a YIELD sign, not a stop sign.  I see people doing this all the time.  You are defeating the purpose of a roundabout by stopping the flow of traffic.

1.  And the MOST important of them all.  Use your DAMN signal when you exit.  It's really that simple.  First and foremost it's the law (You are technically changing lanes).  People are pulled over where I live in Lincoln every day for not doing this.  Granted, most are not given a ticket but it's a reason the cops can pull you over.  By signaling, you help to keep the flow of traffic as well.  That way, the person yielding for you outside of the roundabout will know it's safe to enter or at least proceed with caution.

There you have it.  5 EASY things to remember when going through a roundabout when you go home from work today.  I see Bismarck is even adding a couple more roundabouts in the near future.  They're not going away, people.  Get with the program.  Okay, I'll get off my soap box.
