BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The State Historical Society is inviting the public to attend the grand opening of the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum expansion.

North Dakota governors and other officials will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony Sunday for the revamped center, which includes a new theater, cafe and outdoor space. Free entertainment, artist demonstrations and activities for kids are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

State lawmakers approved about $40 million for the 97,000-square-foot expansion in 2009. The historical society raised an additional $12 million.

The society's director says the expansion will provide much need space for collections, exhibits and public services. Two museum galleries will open to the public Sunday and feature exhibits on topics such as rural electric cooperatives.

The opening is being held on the state's 125th anniversary.
