Did you know the Weather Channel names each significant winter storm that will impact much of the country?

This is something they have been doing now for 13 seasons. They give each letter of the alphabet a storm name and start the season with the letter "A" and go from there.

According to the Weather Channel, the winter storm naming usually begins in November but has come as early as October.

What are the criteria for a winter weather system to become a named storm by the Weather Channel?

We are currently on the letter "C" winter storm "Cora" which has been wreaking havoc on places not used to a lot of winter weather across the United States.

According to the Weather Channel, in order for a winter storm to be named, it must be a "high-impact storm with significant snow and or ice affecting at least one, if not multiple regions of the country."

That's something we sure know about in North Dakota...high impact winter storms that can sometimes be a life or death situation.

People often make fun of others who always talk about the weather up here in North Dakota, but to be honest, the weather is always on people's minds for the reasons above. Not to mention, it's fun to b*tch about.

Last year in 2023-2024, there were 20 named winter storms from October to April.

We are off to a bit of a slow start so far this season with only 3 named winter storms so far being on the letter "C" and Cora. Who knows, we could be adding a 4th letter this weekend when an Alberta Clipper hits North Dakota. Find out more about that here.

Just in case you are wondering, here are the 26 named winter storms for the 2024-2025 season.

Maybe your name is one of them.
