Tensions are High in the Middle East

The war with Iran is spreading across the Middle East as the bombing missions between the United States and Israel continue to target strategic points inside Iran. Meanwhile, Iran continues to strike U.S. allies across the region, including Azerbaijan, on Thursday, according to NPR.

According to USA Today, before today's strike on Azerbaijan, 9 other countries have been drawn into this conflict in the Middle East, including Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, which have all been targeted by Iranian drones, missiles, or bombers.

Meanwhile, the Russia-Ukraine War Continues

These days, Russia, North Korea, China, and even Iran previously, are all a threat to the world with their nuclear capabilities.  Russia is an ally of Iran, and if they weren't involved in their own war with Ukraine, you have to wonder how they would get involved with the U.S.-Iran war.

A FEMA map from 2015 has resurfaced, showing likely targets in the United States in a nuclear war.

The black dots represent a target of 2,000 warheads.  The purple triangles represent a target of 500 silos.

As you can see by this map above, North Dakota would be blown to smithereens.  Especially in central and northwest North Dakota.  We're close enough in Bismarck that there would likely be little left in our part of the 701 as well.

Here's a bigger view of that map.  As you can see, North Dakota has one of the 3 biggest targets in the entire country.  The city of Fargo and the Grand Forks Air Force Base would also be targeted.

I remember growing up in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and seeing the hundreds of nuclear silos dotted all across the landscape west of town.  I spent a lot of time hunting and fishing when I was young, and there was always the constant reminder of nuclear war. Now, the nuclear silos in northeast North Dakota are abandoned, but that doesn't mean North Dakota is void of nuclear weapons.  Quite the contrary.

The Minot, North Dakota area now holds some of the biggest nuclear stockpiles we have in America and would obviously be a massive target by any enemy of the United States.

According to Atomic Archive, Minot Air Force Base is home to 150 Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles with a range of over 6,000 miles.  They also have a wing of B-52H bombers armed with gravity bombs, air-launched cruise missiles, and stealth advanced cruise missiles.

This is all a sad reminder of how volatile the world is again.  Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail, and the Iran conflict and the Russian-Ukrainian war will come to a peaceful resolution soon.

Today these parks are located throughout the country in 25 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The land encompassing them was either purchased or donated, though much of it had been inhabited by native people for thousands of years before the founding of the United States. These areas are protected and revered as educational resources about the natural world, and as spaces for exploration.
