North Dakota Has One Of The Least Common Town Names In USA
Did you know that North Dakota has a town name that is considered one of the rarest names in the country?
How rare? It came in at #5 out of 50 cities from all across the United States. Let's face it, we have a lot of rare town and city names in North Dakota. This would explain, why even our residents can't even pronounce many of our small towns.

I mean after all, do you know how to say "Pembina", North Dakota correctly? I bet half the people in Bismarck Mandan would fail to say it correctly. It's Pem-ba-nah not Pem-bina like so many people say.
I recently ran across an interesting article from our friends at 24/7 Wall Street titled "The Least Common Town Names in the U.S."
North Dakota's crown jewel of small towns with unique names made quite an impact on their list.
Before we unveil this very small town, that is not too far away from Bismarck Mandan by the way, let's dive into 24/7 Wall Street's methodology on how they came up with their data.
"They reviewed nearly 30,000 names of cities, towns, villages, boroughs, and census-designated places", according to the article.
The town name in North Dakota that is EXTREMELY uncommon is none other than Zap, North Dakota.
As I mentioned earlier, it was good enough to finish at #5 on their list. The rest of the Top 5 includes:
#5 Zap, North Dakota- we all remember "Zip to Zap" right?
#4 War, West Virginia
#3 I.X.L, Oklahoma
#2 Gas, Texas
#1 Box, Oklahoma
There you have it. Well done Zap, North Dakota. By the way, according to Wikipedia, Zap, North Dakota got its name from a prominent Minnesota banking family or a coal-mining town in Scotland.
