Good news for holiday travelers.

A record number of Americans are expected to travel over the Christmas holiday, and they will be greeted with lower gas prices in North Dakota and across the nation. According to Newsweek, these are the lowest gas prices in nearly 5 years. The average cost of a gallon of regular gas in the United States is currently $2.89. You have to go back to May of 2021 before we had gas prices this low. The cheapest gas in America right now is in Oklahoma, with prices around $2.29. California has the most expensive gas, topping off at $4.49.

How low are gas prices in North Dakota?

Gas prices across North Dakota also vary considerably. According to AAA Fuel Prices, the cheapest gas prices are in Ransom County, where the current average is $2.45 a gallon. Cass County, another county that traditionally has some of the cheapest gas in the state, is at $2.46 a gallon. The cheapest gas closest to Bismarck-Mandan is in Oliver and Kidder Counties, where it's currently averaging $2.59 a gallon. Even in Bismarck-Mandan-Lincoln, there seems to be a wide array of prices. I've seen prices from $2.89 to $2.69.

How low can we expect gas prices to go, and will lower prices continue in 2026?

The good news is that gas prices are expected to remain lower for the remainder of 2025. Again, great news for your holiday travel. Some long-term predictions by analysts like JPMorgan continue to show a downward slide in the price of crude oil throughout 2026, meaning the gas could stay cheap all next year. Keep in mind, long-term predictions tend to fluctuate as gas prices are always volatile, depending on a wide variety of factors.

Let's hope this trend of cheaper gas prices continues to hold.
