It's not quite time to go back to school, but we are getting close. Typically, North Dakota schools start back up in the second week of August, so while it's not quite time to go back to school it is getting close.

I know it's hard to think that in just a few short weeks, our summer will start winding down.

Most schools in North Dakota, if not all have 5-day school weeks, but schools all across the country will be changing that this year. Many of them will be switching to a 4-day school week, and I'm for it.

So, why should North Dakota consider switching to a 4-day school week for the 2025-2026 school year? Here are a few reasons the National Conference of State Legislatures say it's a good idea.

1. Cost Savings

4-day weeks would save the district a lot of money. This is everything from transportation costs to utilities.

2. Teacher Morale

By that fifth school day, even the teachers are ready to get out of there for some well-deserved R&R, and time with their own kids.

Doing this could inspire others to go into the teaching profession due to the flexible hours.

3.Improved Attendance

This is just a theory, but I think students will be less likely to skip or miss a day if the week is only four days long.

4. Rest

All around, an extra day of rest and family time could improve student's test scores, and result in less discipline issues. The extra day will allow for students and teachers to come back more focused and engaged, and it will be all around better for mental health.
