Easy Ways We Can Tell You’re Not From North Dakota
North Dakotans can pretty easily spot a person who isn't originally from the state, or at least, someone who hasn't been here for too long.
I put together a list of ways we can tell you're not from here. Let's dig in.
Attitude
Look, I like anyone complain in my day-to-day life, but if you're an out-of-towner, you're complaining about very specific things like how cold it is. After a while, you get used to it and actually think 30 degrees is pretty warm. If you're not from here, you're struggling at 30. When it drops into the negatives, you're a true negative Nancy.
Not only that, but we frequently hear newcomers complain that we don't have In-N-Out, White Castles, and Sonic restaurants in many cities.
All I can say is, you will get used to it. Give it time.
Pronunciation
North Dakotans have a unique way of pronouncing words like. 'Bag' and 'Ag' are the big ones. 'Bag' needs to sound like there is a "Y" in it. Like, bayg. Ag (as in agriculture) needs to sound like the word "Egg."
Roundabouts
North Dakota keeps getting more and more roundabouts, and some, while out-of-towners might not understand how they work, North Dakotans have this down pat. We're getting new ones installed all the time.
Shovels
If you meet someone who doesn't own a snow shovel yet, or has never heard of a snowblower, that's a dead giveaway that the person is NOT from North Dakota. You can't survive without them. P.S. I had never heard of a snowblower until I moved here, so don't feel bad.
Football
North Dakotans are divided into two groups. If someone isn't a fan of the Green Bay Packers or Minnesota Vikings, chances are they're not from this state.
