What’s Next for Sidney Montana? A Closer Look at the Community-Driven Downtown Master Plan
The new year often brings a renewed focus on goals—personal, professional, and for communities, long-term growth and improvement. In Sidney, Montana, that forward-looking mindset is taking shape through a newly compiled Downtown Master Plan, and city officials are encouraging residents to review it and share their thoughts. The plan reflects extensive community input and outlines a clear vision for strengthening downtown Sidney as a vibrant, welcoming hub.

Another major focus is expanded dining, retail, and events. The feedback shows clear demand for more restaurants, cafés, specialty shops, and consistent year-round programming. Nearly four out of five respondents (78 percent) supported additional retail and specialty shops, while 65 percent favored more dining options. Entertainment and nightlife also ranked high, along with concerts, performances, festivals, and farmers’ markets—highlighting a desire for downtown to be active beyond the traditional workday.

Residents also emphasized the importance of public space enhancements. Requests for more greenery, landscaping, seating, and pedestrian-friendly gathering areas were common. Better sidewalks, cleanliness, and family-friendly spaces were repeatedly mentioned, reinforcing the idea that downtown should be comfortable and accessible for everyone.
Addressing vacancy and building conditions was a top concern. Nearly 80 percent of respondents identified filling vacant storefronts as a priority, with many pointing to Village Square Mall and other underutilized properties as key redevelopment opportunities.
Finally, the plan addresses connectivity and safety, including improved sidewalks, crosswalks, ADA accessibility, traffic calming, and safer intersections—especially along Main Street.
The Downtown Master Plan for Sidney is now available here for public viewing. Residents are encouraged to explore it and be part of shaping Sidney’s future, because a strong downtown benefits the entire community.
