Health officials said the risk of infection continues as long as mosquitoes are active and are encouraging residents to take simple precautions to avoid bites.
Those include using EPA-approved insect repellents, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, and limiting time outside during early morning and evening hours when mosquitoes are most active. Residents are also urged to eliminate standing water around their homes, repair window and door screens, and keep yards well maintained.

What To Look Out For
Most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms. When illness does occur, it often includes fever, headache, body aches or rash. In more serious cases, the virus can affect the nervous system, leading to severe complications or death. Older adults and people with underlying health conditions face the highest risk.

So far this year, mosquito pools carrying the virus have been detected in Cass, Grand Forks, Richland, Ward and Williams counties. The virus has also been found in one animal in Sioux County and a bird in Richland County.
