Over the weekend, I was doing some grocery shopping when I ran into a friend grabbing a container of ice cream. I joked that summer is almost over and he better not eat it too fast or he'd get brain freeze.

Of course, when it comes to ice cream, I'm convinced there's never a bad time for it. Summer, fall, winter or spring, a scoop always seems to hit the spot.

But when it comes to choosing a flavor, that's where things get interesting.

What's America's Favorite?

Vanilla, chocolate, mint chocolate chip, cookie dough, rocky road. There are plenty of choices, and everyone seems to have their favorite.

According to an annual report from Mental Floss, strawberry is America's favorite ice cream flavor.

But preferences change depending on where you live.

In our part of the country, the choices are pretty interesting:

  • North Dakota: Caramel
  • Montana: Cookie Dough
  • South Dakota: Cookies & Cream
  • Minnesota: Strawberry

I have to admit, North Dakota's choice of caramel is not bad. But if I'm standing in front of the freezer, I'm probably reaching for rocky road.

Summer Isn't Over Quite Yet

The dog days of summer are winding down, and fall is just around the corner. Before we start worrying about snow, freezing temperatures and scraping windshields, there's still plenty of time to enjoy one of summer's simplest treats.

So the next time you're at the grocery store, take a look in the freezer.

Maybe grab North Dakota's favorite.

Or go with your own.

Just don't eat it too fast. That brain freeze is no joke!
