One season that seems to last longer than others in North Dakota are the fields of hay bales. Now don't get us wrong, there is nothing that makes West River, and still kids at heart, happier than to see these fields especially following years of droughts to grasshoppers. But there is one constant that makes us smile year after year, and that is how this farmer and his wife along one of the prettiest highways in the state treats all that pass with a "Hay" Howdy Do.

Highway 200

Meet Johnny and Leona Flemmer from Golden Valley. If you've ever had a chance to visit Mercer County, and travel along Highway 200 which cuts across the state of North Dakota, running east and west, more than likely you've seen their display of "Hay People" to various other patriotic themes. For over 30 years, going back to 1990, the Flemmer family has designed bale art for all to enjoy. Even doing so on years when hay was extremely limited, always donating a few bales and time to make folks smile.

The Bale Family

Over the years the "Bale Family" have very much become part of the "North Dakota Legendary" landscape. Often one will find artwork for sale featuring pictures in calendars or sold as prints to display. A tip of the hat to the American farmer and rancher. Throughout the years, there have been times when the strong winds have toppled the hay couple, or they've been hit by lightning. Regardless, the Bale Family always comes back to life.
