Friday looks like it could be a bumpy ride for virtually all of North Dakota.

Scattered thunderstorms could become severe over North Dakota after a warm day in the upper 80s on Friday afternoon.

What is the timing for these potential severe storms?

According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, we have a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms developing between 1 pm and 4 pm.

That chance for storms increases to 40 percent after 4 pm, and late afternoon, early evening appears to be the most likely time for severe weather to develop across North Dakota.

What are the potential impacts of these thunderstorms?

Hail the size of tennis balls, damaging winds up to 70 miles per hour, and even a tornado or two.

It would be a good idea to be weather aware on Friday afternoon as you start your weekend. Here's a map showing that just about the entire state of North Dakota will be in a Level 2 severe weather potential.

The rest of your weekend looks to be warm on Saturday, with highs in the Bismarck/Mandan area to be in the upper 80s. Storm chances return again on Saturday evening and early Sunday morning as a strong cold front will drop temperatures down into the low 70s on Sunday.

Those cooler temperatures will linger into the early part of next week, with expected high temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s. There will be a slight chance of showers on Monday and Tuesday as well.

June is typically the month we receive most of our rain in North Dakota each year.

As always, we will take it when we can get it. Hopefully, without the hail, damaging winds, or tornadoes.
