We love our German cuisine in North Dakota.

Especially in western North Dakota, which is more heavily influenced by our German heritage.

To be honest, when I moved to Bismarck over 6 years ago, I had never even heard of Knoephla soup, Fleischkuechle, or Kuchen, for that matter. This was a whole new world to me.

As somebody who grew up on the east side of the state, I can tell you firsthand, the Scandinavian way of life is more prevalent. Both when it comes to traditional foods and culture.

An example of Scandinavian heritage would be lutefisk served over the holidays. Something you don't hear nearly as much about on the western side of the state. I consider this a good thing, as lutefisk is AWFUL. I wouldn't even serve it to my dog.

It didn't take long for me to warm up to German food.

I quickly learned how delicious Kuchen is, by the way, I even served it at my son's high school graduation a couple of years back.

I'm also a fan of Fleischkuechle (as long as it's not too dry), but I don't see myself warming to saurkraut anytime soon.

There are a few restaurants in Bismarck-Mandan that serve some sort of German cuisine to some degree.

Kroll's Diner immediately comes to mind (it's where I first tried Fleischkuechle), Frieds Family Restaurant in Mandan, Huckleberry House, and Das Mountain in Mandan.

One restaurant in North Dakota has been given the nod as one of the 50 Best German Restaurants in the country.

An article caught my eye recently on MSN, naming the best of the best when it comes to German cuisine.

Surprisingly, North Dakota's top choice comes from a restaurant on the east side of the state.

North Dakota's best German restaurant is Wurst Bier Hall in Fargo & West Fargo.

Apparently, the restaurant has a fun vibe and serves a variety of German dishes with an extensive selection of beers. The article goes on to say Wurst Bier Hall captures the spirit of German social dining.

The West Fargo location is located at 3179 Bluestem Drive, and the Fargo Wurst Bier Hall is located at 630 1st Avenue North in downtown Fargo.

If you love German food, consider trying this next time you're in the Fargo area.
