According to a well-known hunting publication, North Dakota has one of the top 10 cities in the United States for duck hunters.

Speaking of duck hunting, the highly anticipated North Dakota waterfowl opener will be here before you know it. The season begins for North Dakota residents on Saturday, September 27th, for ducks, geese, and mergansers. Non-residents will have to wait until the following week to hunt in North Dakota on Saturday, October 4th.

The forecast for the North Dakota duck season 2025 is expected to be more difficult.

Dry conditions in the pothole region this past spring resulted in poor nesting conditions. Because of that, most duck species are down in numbers heading into the season, most notably Mallard numbers.

This is according to a video I watched from the North Dakota Game and Fish concerning spring breeding numbers. With that being said, even when hunting is "down" in North Dakota, it's still pretty good, comparatively speaking, with the rest of the country.

North Dakota is well known among the duck hunting community across the country as one of the best places to hunt, especially if you enjoy freelance hunting like me. We are the duck factor of the United States, and because of this, we are always a popular destination for duck hunters all across the country.

A city in North Dakota has been recognized as one of the 10 best places to live in the United States.

The publication, Meateater, goes on to name cities such as Houston, Texas, Little Rock, Arkansas, Memphis, Tennessee, New Orleans, Louisiana, Portland, Oregon, Sacramento, California, Salt Lake City, among others, as some of the ten best places to live if you enjoy chasing waterfowl like I do.

One North Dakota city cracked Meateater's top 10 list, and that is Fargo, North Dakota.

The article goes on to say this about Fargo. Its proximity to Devils Lake, field hunting opportunities, and prairie potholes is why they couldn't leave Fargo off the list.

I had to chuckle, to be honest, after reading this article. Fargo, of course, is in the Red River Valley, with rather limited duck hunting opportunities, comparatively speaking. Bismarck, Jamestown, Devils Lake, or even Minot would have been much better choices as cities that are much closer to great duck hunting.

Oh well, at least North Dakota got some love. It's the most wonderful time of the year. Hunting season in North Dakota. Enjoy the season.
