Exploring The Contrasts Of Eastern And Western North Dakota Folks
Let me start off by saying, I have lived most of my life in eastern North Dakota.
I was born and raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota. I also attended one year of college in Minot, North Dakota. That was my first taste of the West and to be honest I loved it.
For one thing, there's actually some scenery. I swear, eastern North Dakota is so flat, that you can see Fargo from Grand Forks. That might be a bit of an exaggeration but not by much. Lots of shelterbelts and sugarbeet fields.
Since I moved to Bismarck, to be honest, the only thing I miss about eastern North Dakota is UND hockey and my friends.
I've now been living in the Bismarck area for five-plus years. Which is hard to believe, because it has gone by in the blink of an eye.
Since I have been living in the West, I have noticed several differences between an eastern North Dakotan and a western North Dakotan. Culture, mannerisms, and even the way they talk.
Some of these differences are subtle, others are as big as a mile wide.
You could even go one step further. Western North Dakota could be divided into "East River" and "West River". I know especially people who live west of the Missouri River feel there is a big difference between them and what people are like east of the Big Muddy. That's for another story.
So, let's get to it. Let's celebrate our differences as North Dakotans.
