Elevated Risk For Severe Weather For Parts Of North Dakota
Parts of western North Dakota could be rumbling later on today.
According to the Storm Prediction Center and the National Weather Service, extreme western North Dakota could see some pretty bumpy weather on Wednesday, August 21st.
Here's a map from the Storm Prediction Center for today, which has parts of North Dakota at a Level 2 risk for severe thunderstorms.
As you can see by the map, a good share of western North Dakota has a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms for today. That does include a good share of our listening area to the west.
Extreme western and northwest North Dakota has a greater risk for severe weather today as they are at a Level 2 chance. Cities included in this area include Williston, Watford City, and Crosby.
What are the main impacts and timing of these storms in the Level 2 area?
These storms will likely be supercell storms capable of producing large hail up to golf ball size and damaging winds of 60 to 80 miles per hour. Locally heavy rainfall is also possible in this Level 2 area.
These storms are expected to form this afternoon and continue into the evening hours.
What will we see in the Bismarck Mandan area?
Thunderstorms are not expected to be severe in the Bismarck Mandan area and south-central North Dakota. A few of the storms could be on the strong side however with locally heavy rain. They are expected to form after 9 pm and may linger into the overnight hours.
Warmer weather for Bismarck Mandan is expected for the weekend with highs in the mid to upper 80s to low 90s.
