We just experienced record-setting snow in Bismarck and across all of south-central North Dakota.  Something tells me this is going to be a long winter.

I remember last year after we had a minor snowfall event, my neighbor across the street decided to push some of his driveway snow into my ditch.  I didn't think much about it at the time.  To be honest, I've never had a neighbor do this before, but it got me thinking if this is even legal.

Now, I'm a pretty easygoing guy.  If he would've asked me, I would've said, "no problem".  Well, after that snow melted I couldn't help but notice a huge pile of dirt and rocks he also pushed into my yard.  Another concern is adding to the water table, which wasn't a problem last year, but who knows, could be this coming spring (More chances for that water to end up in my basement..)

So I decided to do some research to see if it's even legal to do this.  "Push or shovel" snow into your neighbor's yard?  Here's what the city of Bismarck website had to say.  "Contractors, businesses, and residents are reminded that they shall not push snow into the street or across the street onto the boulevard when clearing parking lots and/or driveways.

According to a City Ordinance, a person may not move, dump, or deposit by any means any snow or ice accumulated on private property onto any public street, alley, or public right-of-way.  The fine for this violation is up to $1,000." And according to former Mayor Steve Bakken, it is illegal to move snow from one city residential home to another without permission and you could be fined.

So, there you go.  Don't be that guy or girl.  Don't blow snow into your neighbor's yard or into a street.  It could cost you.  I recently had a talk with my neighbor and he won't be doing that again.
