In an era of brick and mortar stores closing daily, it's kind of nice to see new stores actually opening up.  According to an article on KFYR-TV, Lemon, South Dakota is the latest city in the region that will be getting a new Dollar General Store.  They are expected to get the chain store later this Summer.

Dollar General is opening up thousands of stores across the country and many of them are in the Dakota's.  The retail chain has more 16,000 stores across the United States in a total of 46 states.  The nearest Dollar General location in our local area include stores in Steele & New Salem.  They also have stores in Elgin, Linton, Underwood, Richardton, Beulah, Hazen and Garrison locally near Bismarck Mandan.

They recently opened up a Dollar General store near my lake cabin in Waubay, South Dakota.  I took a stroll through it and here are a few of my observations.  First off, don't let the name fool you.  It's NOT a dollar store.  There are very items priced at only one dollar.  I would say it more resembles a scaled down Walmart.  Which is perfect for these small communities without a lot of services.  You'll find a small selection of groceries from bread, eggs, milk, canned goods and frozen foods.  They have some hardware items, personal care items, health, seasonal items,  outdoor living, pet supplies, beauty, office & school supplies, auto, baby, toys, apparel and even electronics.

I can certainly see why Dollar General is thriving in these small communities.  Look for more of them to pop here in the Dakota's.
