Discover The History & Charm Of North Dakota’s Oldest Road
Have you ever wondered, "What is North Dakota's oldest road?"
It's been around a lot longer than any of us. Chances are if you live in the Bismarck or Mandan areas you frequently use this road.
Did you know before the highway systems were created, there were trails across the country that were assigned by color names?
According to North Dakota Tourism, this trail originally extended from Seattle all the way to New York City and dashed across the state of North Dakota.
The oldest road in North Dakota that I'm speaking of is known as Old Highway 10.
Its designated color name was "red". A stretch of this highway today is known as "The Old Red Old 10 Scenic Byway." This old route was once used by General Custer on his westward march to Montana and runs parallel to Interstate 94.
The Old Red Old 10 Scenic Byway begins in Mandan and extends to Dickinson.
Along the route, you can enjoy plenty of beautiful scenery, wildlife, and points of interest along the way.
Specifically on the Old Red Old 10 Scenic Byway, there's the legendary Mandan Depot, Salem Sue at New Salem, Sims Church, Fort Sauerkraut at Hebron, Assumption Abbey at Richardton, Schnell Recreation Area near RIchardton, and the Dickinson Museum Center.
According to our news partner KX News, The Old Red Old 10 Scenic Byway is considered one of the 10 most scenic roads in North Dakota.
Enjoy the subtle beauty all around you in North Dakota this summer, including North Dakota's oldest road, The Old Highway 10.
