Chilling Outlook: North Dakota’s Winter Weather Prediction
The forecast for the next three months is out from the National Weather Service.
What can we expect for the remainder of winter in North Dakota? We have been hearing that temperatures are going to trend cooler as we head into a La Nina winter for a while now.
According to the latest data from the Climate Prediction Center from the National Weather Service, this appears to be true. Take a look at the temperature map for the country below.
In fact, this weekend and the first full week of January, North Dakota will see some of the winter's coldest temperatures so far. Eastern North Dakota especially will be dealing with overnight lows in the teens below zero with high temperatures likely staying below zero.
Western North Dakota will be just a hair warmer with overnight lows in the single digits below zero and high temperatures in the single digits to low teens to kick off the first full week of January.
As you can see from the map above, temperatures in North Dakota are likely to be a little below average for the remainder of the winter.
We will no doubt have some polar vortex outbreaks, but it doesn't look to be the next ice age.
How about precipitation in North Dakota for the remainder of the winter?
We have been well below normal for snowfall in North Dakota so far. Snowmobilers, skiers, and those who enjoy the winter "white stuff" haven't really seen much for snow over the last two winters.
Looking at the precipitation map below from the Climate Prediction Center it doesn't look like the snow will be piling up this winter.
Most of North Dakota is expected to have about normal winter precipitation. Even an average will seem like a fair amount compared to what we have seen so far.
Bismarck averages about 46 inches of snowfall each year.
That's enough to please most winter enthusiasts. In the meantime, get ready for a mini polar vortex to hit the state starting on the overnight Friday as temperatures will go below zero for most of us and be significantly colder next week.
